To speak about employment and unemployment, you need the appropriate vocabulary.

Application - an official request for something, usually in writing;

Application form - a form that you use to officially ask for something, for example a job;

Apply for a job - to ask officially for the position, often by writing;

Trainee - someone who is learning how to do something, especially a job;

Apprenticeship - when someone learns the skills needed to do a job by working for someone who already has skills and experience;

CV - a document which describes your qualifications and the jobs you have done, which you send to an employer that you want to work for;

Job interview - a meeting in which an employer asks the person applying for a job questions to see whether they would be the right person to do that job;

Skilled worker - worker has had special training to do it;

Training - the process of learning the skills you need to do a particular job or activity;

Vacancy - a job that is available for someone to do;

Be unemployed - not having a job;

Be out of work - to not have a job;

Fire - to tell someone they must leave their job;

Dismiss - to officially make someone leave their job;

Look for a job - search for a new place of work;

Quit - to leave your job or school permanently;

Resign - to officially tell your employer that you are leaving your job;

Unemployment - the number of people who are unemployed.

Examples:

Tell me if you hear of any vacancies for secretaries.

I've been unemployed for six months.

The government is helping to create jobs for the unemployed.

My father was out of work at the time, so we struggled, obviously.

I was fired for being late.
